Our Aminjikarai College, right in the heart of Chennai, doesn’t just offer our widest range of courses under one roof, it is also located amidst the ‘hustle & bustle’ of the city and therefore offers great job opportunities in the surrounding areas.

It began 1976

in a rented rooftop shed covered with coconut leaves. The first training course for poor women in the neighbourhood was handloom weaving. Mr Alexander, the same who started the boys’ fitters training also knew handloom weaving, and he taught the women to weave and they received a stipend if they continued after the basic training.

In the years following, the young girls and women were also taught batiks and computer basics and received Government or institutional certificates. Today Tailoring is taught to women of the neighbourhood in convenient 2-hour classes suitable to adjust with their chores at home. The campus has a spacious women’s hostel. It provides accommodation for young women that study in our GTC tailoring or Community College.
